I ask people all the time what are the things they need to do to improve their health. The answers are almost always the same, as it’s no secret. Pretty much everyone knows they need healthier food choices and need to exercise to improve their health.
Yet, few people do these things on a regular basis. They try. Oh do they try. We’re quickly approaching the time of year where people will make their resolutions, they’ll buy gym memberships and get personal trainers and sign up for programs that deliver them highly processed food or eat according to some point system or just swear off every food they love. Unfortunately, these efforts are rarely successful or sustainable.
The reason is not because the person is lazy or weak. The reason is because most people simply lack the emotional skills to make a better choice.
We are pleasure seeking beings. This means we will continually do what brings us pleasure and avoid those that bring us pain. Interestingly, we are able to get surges of pleasure enhancing dopamine from smoking, pizza and sitting on the couch, just as we are able to obtain it from healthy choices. The difference is, sick people seek sick pleasures and healthy people seek healthy pleasures.
The good news is you’re able to switch sides! But this is where your emotional skills need implemented. Emotional skills need exercised just like your muscles. Without consistent practice they become weak and sick. Self control is an emotional skill and it’s easier to implement in some situation versus others.
For example, if you found a wallet, would you immediately return it or think about it first? Hopefully, that’s an easy emotional skill test.
When you make a decision for lunch, do you make your decision based on nutrient content or what tastes good?
It’s likely you’ve spent a lifetime making that decision based on what tastes good. It’s probably what has been modeled to you by your parents. To change your health, you must have enough self control – for long enough – so that your healthy lifestyle choices begin to provide you with the pleasure you once received from unhealthy lifestyle choices.
Have you ever spoke to a runner who says something along the lines of “I use to hate running, and now I can’t imagine a day where I don’t run”? This is because they practiced self control for long enough to begin to receive pleasure from running. Now, when faced with the choice of sitting on the couch watching another rerun of Friends or going out for a run, they chose running because it is actually more pleasurable for them.
You are capable of changing the current state of your health. You just need the right plan. If you have the wrong map, you’ll never get to your destination no matter how hard you try.
Read on if you need a new map and are ready to receive it. The map I offer contains not only the appropriate lifestyle choices, but the tools you need to consistently make those choices so that you can achieve the levels of health and well being that you desire and deserve!
