I’ve had som electrical difficulties in the office for the last week. Sure, being a business owner may seem quite glamorous, but ugh! I’d be super happy if I could just show up at the office and adjust person after person all day long. But, the silly stuff that happens has to be dealt with by someone, and at this point it’s me. A few weeks ago, two days in a row the lights in just 3 of my 8 rooms were flickering on and offer for the first hour that they were turned on. I of course called my land lord – hoping to push this problem onto someone else quickly. He sent over someone you noticed that the lights were on and not a problem and said there was nothing he could do. Suggested I had a bad bulb. 6 lights with two bulbs each all went out simultaneously? I get it. I’m a female and stereotypically don’t know much about “man things” but I’m not an idiot. Oddly, the lights worked fine for the next 2 weeks until I walked in one Thursday morning. The lights flickers for several seconds after I flipped the switch and then went out. For good. After making several phone calls, exactly 1 week later, I got an electrician in who quickly found the problem was the neutral. However, why was the neutral bad? Turns out one of the wires into the box melted. Scary. He says whoever wired it didn’t know what he was doing or was stupid. So a couple of things about this. I went a week without lights in a few rooms in my office and for the most part, it was business as usual. If I was going to lose lights in 3 rooms those were just about the best three rooms to lose them. Lucky! Today when they were “diagnosing” the issue, in anticipating of losing all my power I shut off my computer which houses everything about my business. My schedule, my electronic health records, ability to collect money. Yikes! Even still, I was able to run my practice efficiently based on the systems I have put into play. I have an extreme sense of pride over that. And when I had to lose power to the entire office, even though I couldn’t see patients, i was able to reschedule people efficiently. Everything worked out as well as it could have because I have worked very hard on my processes this far. You cannot rely on skills you don’t have when a problem arises. You must be building those skills before the problem arises. About whomever made the mistake in the first place. My first thought is how I always tell people the reason they should work on their health is because the people who rely on you getting a better product or service when you are your best. Perhaps just maybe, that person didn’t feel their best – physically, mentally, spiritually – whichever it was, their health was lacking and perhaps contributed to their oversight that contributed to this electrical issues. My next thought was one of my favorite quotes by the developer of chiropractic, BJ Palmer. You never know how far reaching something you say, do, or think today will effect the lives of millions of people tomorrow. Sure. These lights being out were a big inconvenience to me. But the person who carelessly wired the fuse box ultimately interfered with the care of all my patients who have to spend time until their next adjustment not expressing their fullest life potential. How do their families and the people that depend on their products/services get the best from them? How are these people able to be their best today so that they can give their best? That may seem a little extreme, we’re looking at things on a small scale. But magnify those people by millions who are walking around not living life to their fullest potential and we have a whole lot of people who are not able to give their best because they are not their best. That’s a big thing. Ultimately. From this situation I am finding gratitude and pride. Grateful that I was able to adapt to the situation at hand without major chaos. In a life where I often feel quite stretched to the max, no lights in my office didn’t have such a negative impact on me as it could have. I feel really proud of what I’ve built and really proud of what I bring to the table. Most people have no idea that chiropractic helps them not just feel better, but to actually be the best that they can possibly be in every way. I know that. My practice members know that and now, because the lights went off in my office, I’ve been able to tell you. Thank you!
