Obviously, I’m a huge proponent of Chiropractic. Since every organ of your body connects to your nervous system, it only makes sense to ensure that your nervous system is always functioning at its best. While a lot of people don’t realize that chiropractic can and should be regularly utilized by pregnant women and children, even fewer know that your pets can benefit too! I know a lot of chiropractors will venture out and adjust animals, but not me. Just like with pregnancy and kids, there is a special certification for those Chiropractors who want to excel and provide your pets with the best care possible. For this reason, I always refer to Dr Michael Savko. He’s Western Pennsylvania’s GO TO animal chiropractor.
Dr. Savko is an animal healer. He is also a Board Certified Doctor of Chiropractic, a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, a Reiki provider, and an Internationally Certified Veterinary Chiropractitioner with over 14 years of experience working with both people and companion animals. He is a local Pittsburgher who was born, raised, and currently lives in Westmoreland County. He graduated from the prestigious New York Chiropractic College in 1998 and has been involved with clinical practice, patient advocacy and practice management ever since. Because of his extensive training in a variety of different techniques, patients and clients have noted their treatments as being extremely versatile and effective. One client exclaimed, “as soon as we started seeing Dr. Savko, the problem started getting better!” His purpose is to quickly restore optimum health and give recommendations to stay healthy for life.
Clients have said,”his passionate and professional manner really puts pets and their owners at ease”. “He is really there for the animals.” “He has been a miracle worker for our family.” Since he is always available to address questions, comments or concerns, many people often comment on his “above and beyond efforts” to effectively share his goals and plans as well as spend as much time as needed with each and every patient or client.
Savko has been an animal lover for as long as he can remember. His VOM training was originally completed in the spring of 2000 after which he worked intensively with a local veterinary surgeon for about 12 months to receive his VOM certification. He retook the coursework again in 2005 to remain up-to-date with technique enhancements and innovations. When working on animals Dr. Savko enjoys working closely with a veterinarian to be sure the animal is receiving the best possible care.
Dr. Michael Savko can work on everyone from athletes to grandmothers to infants to dogs, cats, horses and everything in between. For more information on the Holistic Care of Large and Small animals please contact Dr. Savko directly.
For companion animals his main service area is Western Pennsylvania but he is able to work nationally as well as internationally depending on local guidelines! Even though he is extremely busy, he always makes time to help; so if you or your companion animal need help or just want to continue to be healthy, contact him today!
What is VOM?
Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation (or VOM) is a vast healing technology developed in the early 80’s by veterinary surgeon Dr. William L. Inman after 8+ years of research on over 30,000 animals. Dr. Savko studied this technique directly with Dr. Inman during the spring of 2000, and later received his certification after 12 months of intensive work with a local veterinary surgeon. Savko currently works in-house with multiple veterinary hospitals in the Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. He also receives referrals from countless veterinary surgeons, hospitals, and satisfied clients. What Dr. Savko does is best described as a combination of acupressure/chiropractic/massage/energy healing…and then some! VOM was originally used on patients that had a poor prognosis of being helped by surgery, and after many amazing results on these cases, the technique naturally expanded to encompass most problems and disorders that effect companion animals. It can be used on injured, diseased, and healthy patients as well as animal athletes; for the maintenance of well being, the prevention of injury, and to aid or speed the healing process. A consultation is recommended for most conditions and the technique can also be used preventatively; meaning if nerve interference is found and reduced, there is the potential to eliminate the problem before it even starts! So far (after 13+years, and thousands of cases) the results are nothing short of amazing!
The reason why VOM is so very effective is that it can find and reduce blocks in the neuromuscular systems. That is vitally important because nerves are basically responsible for two things: pain and function. Nerves need to operate at their highest levels at all times in order for the body to be healthy, stay healthy, and heal quickly. VOM is non-invasive, it cannot cause harm, it is gentle and easy on the animal. The patient does not get pulled, pushed, or jerked around during the visit, and the work is adjustable to the size of the animal from a kitten to a Clydesdale.
The technique uses devices that deliver motion faster than the human hand with less total force, because of this fact the animal being treated can be in any level of discomfort (or lack thereof) and can be in any position when being treated (sitting, laying, standing) making the therapy much easier, and more safe for the patient. As the motion from the device stimulates the nerves and relaxes tight muscles it can help the system to “heal” by reducing pain and restoring function.
In order to have the greatest results Dr. Savko utilizes two phases. Phase one typically involves a diagnostic and several therapeutic device passes starting at the top of the spine and continuing down into the pelvis. The legs, cranium and other areas can also be evaluated in certain situations. After this Dr. Savko adds a second phase that evaluates for muscular involvement. “Reads” are noted and recorded during these passes and phases. A read is a “reflex” from the animal that indicates there is nerve or muscular interference in that area. Reads can be as little as a mere ear flick or muscle twitch, or they can be as great as a leg jerk or head bob. Since reads are pathological and involuntary they always indicate problem areas and how they change during treatment tells us whether they are acute (don’t read on another pass, meaning they are corrected immediately) or chronic (read continuously, or change in intensity).
Because of these reflex oriented “reads” VOM has the ability to find problems that cannot be seen with the eyes or felt with the hands. There
fore the therapy is extremely deep and comprehensive, and more importantly, highly effective. Go and see all of the testimonials for yourself!

I have personally utilized Dr Savko when my cat began eliminating inappropriately. This is actually how I first met him. I found him to be all around excellent!
