ASD ADD ADHD LD PDD SPD….the pediatric alphabet soup!
My goodness, everywhere you turn you find a kid that has been diagnosed with some combination of letters. The treatments associated with the letters and the schedules of the families is almost as complex as the symptomatology.
The common trait of each of these issues is rooted in the nervous system. These are all neurological development problems. Something has happened that has resulted in a disconnect neurologically for these kids. Perhaps it was a very stressful pregnancy and/or a difficult labor and/or birthing process that resulted in a newborn that didn’t nurse well, had colic/ reflux/ear infections, that turned into a baby that didn’t sit well, never crawled, walked very late and got sick every time the wind blew. That turned into a child who has behavioral issues, trouble learning, sitting still and still catches every virus around, though maybe now we’re getting head and chest colds. Maybe also now suffering with asthma and allergies and still struggling in school. These children have had more than their fair share of antibiotics, ritalin and other medications. The problems they experience are NOT due to a lack of medication.
What we’re really seeing are neurological imbalances. Part of the nervous system is partially being under stimulated and the other part is being over stimulated. Because of this ABC kids respond beautifully under chiropractic care because chiropractic care restores the function and balance of the spine and nervous system. Of course, everyone with a spine benefits from a nervous system that functions optimally, but considering the stress on these children’s nervous systems, it’s even more important that they receive chiropractic care.
However, just like traditional chiropractic techniques must be adapted to suit the specific needs of pregnant women and infants, even chiropractic care for the “typical” pediatric patient needs to be adapted to the ABC kid. Considering the extreme nervous system imbalance these kids often suffer with, the approach to unraveling their nervous system must be very gentle and specific.
For that reason, if you want the best results, it’s imperative you find a chiropractor who has been trained by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). The ICPA offers a year long post graduate program for chiropractors who want to provide all children with the best care possible. Further, membership with the ICPA ensures these chiropractors stay abreast of the most recent developments in pediatric chiropractic.
