Plagiocephaly

As a certified pediatric chiropractor, I frequently work with infants who have been diagnosed with plagiocephaly, a condition where an infant’s head takes on an asymmetrical shape, often due to external pressures or positional factors. Plagiocephaly can result from prolonged time spent lying on one side, or from birth trauma that affects head positioning. Chiropractic care offers a comprehensive approach to addressing this condition, focusing on both alleviating symptoms and promoting healthy head shape development.

One of the primary ways chiropractic care can assist with plagiocephaly is by addressing any underlying spinal misalignments or subluxations. These misalignments, particularly in the cervical spine, can contribute to muscle tension and poor head positioning. By performing gentle, targeted spinal adjustments, chiropractors aim to restore proper alignment and relieve any tension in the muscles surrounding the neck and head. This can help improve the baby’s overall range of motion and reduce any discomfort that may be contributing to the asymmetry.

In addition to spinal adjustments, chiropractic care often includes techniques to address muscle imbalances that may be contributing to plagiocephaly. Many babies with plagiocephaly have tight or overactive muscles on one side of the neck, which can exacerbate head asymmetry. Chiropractors use gentle techniques to release muscle tightness and encourage balanced development. This may involve specific stretches and exercises designed to improve muscle flexibility and strength, which can help promote a more symmetrical head shape.

Another important aspect of chiropractic care for plagiocephaly is education and guidance for parents. Chiropractors often provide recommendations on optimal positioning and tummy time to help prevent further asymmetry. They might suggest techniques for safely varying the baby’s head position during sleep and awake periods to encourage more even head growth. This holistic approach not only addresses the physical adjustments needed but also empowers parents with practical strategies to support their baby’s development at home.

It’s essential to remember that chiropractic care for infants is highly specialized and involves gentle techniques tailored to their delicate bodies. The goal is to provide a supportive treatment that complements other interventions, such as helmet therapy if needed. By focusing on spinal alignment, muscle balance, and parental education, chiropractic care can be an effective component of a comprehensive approach to managing plagiocephaly, ultimately helping to improve the baby’s head shape and overall well-being.

“I just started going to Dr. Stephanie…

…but I have a ton of hope for the pain improvement I will see along with the prep for labor I’ll need when our little one joins us in 7 months. The staff is extremely kind and helpful and the amount of time Dr. Stephanie took with me as a new patient was so appreciated.”
